Our aim is to develop confident mathematicians who are fluent in the fundamentals of numeracy, can apply mathematical reasoning when following a line of enquiry and can solve problems set in a range of routine and non-routine contexts. Throughout school we plan and teach in accordance with the principles of mastery and wholeheartedly believe that children develop a depth of understanding around mathematical concepts by developing a conceptual understanding alongside procedural methods. A high priority is also given to teaching children mental strategies with daily sessions taking place to build speed and stamina.
Children are given many opportunities to gain a depth of knowledge and understanding both in and outside the classroom. We use a number of tools to support maths in school, with a particular focus on mental maths, Numicon and a range of other manipulatives.
