CITIZENSHIP

INTENT

At Maltby Redwood, we aim to maintain a caring ethos within our school, where each member of the school community feels valued and respected.

Through our citizenship lessons, which are an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum, we strive to empower our children and equip them with all the skills they need to be successful beyond the school gates.

Our intent is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child. At Redwood, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

With a particular focus on emotional wellbeing and positive mental health, we intend to ensure that our children are able to articulate their feelings and use shared strategies to regulate their emotions.

By taking part in different events across the academic year, we are able to continually promote a culture of anti-bullying, positive mental health and wellbeing and British values.

Our citizenship offer is also responsive, with lessons being delivered to address situations as and when they arise.

IMPLEMENTATION

As part of the citizenship offer, we have opted to follow the RoSis Scheme of work for PHSE/RSHE, in conjunction with resources such as Picture News, BBC Newsround, NoS, Kapow and Zones of regulation.

The scheme of work includes the following topics:

CITIZENSHIP PERSONAL, SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL EDUCATION RELATIONSHIPS, HEALTH & SEX EDUCATION
British Values Emotional Health Healthy relationships
Careers Coping Strategies Puberty/ Growing Up
Financial Education Bullying/ E-Safety Risk Taking/ Safety
Diversity Healthy Eating & Physical Activity Subtance Misuse
    Tobacco

Although the spiral curriculum starts in Year 1 and follows the children through to Year 6. Citizenship is also taught through the wider curriculum offer in our Nursery and Reception provision.

The distribution of the lessons complements key campaigns throughout the year such as Anti-bullying Week and Mental Health Awareness Week.

We encourage opportunities for discussion and debate. Open learning activities provide an opportunity for pupils to develop their skills, knowledge and positive attitude. We firmly believe children debating or discussing topics that are current and relevant to them, helps them to practise using specific language whilst talking about their feelings, developing key skills for the future.

IMPACT

Children will demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty. They will demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school, a pride in their academy and its vision and values. Attendance will be in-line with national averages and behaviour will be good. Children will become healthy and responsible members of society feeling prepared for life after primary school, where they will go on to lead successful lives as part of the wider community.
