PHYSICAL EDUCATION

INTENT

PE at Maltby Redwood aims to develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities necessary for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing in our children now and for their future. Physical fitness is an important part of understanding the benefits of improving lifelong health and increasing the absence of disease. It also encourages the need to lead a healthier lifestyle through exercise and food choices.

It teaches self-discipline and that to be successful, you must work hard, show resilience and have the determination to believe that anything can be achieved. We deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to improve their skills and apply them to a game situation. We want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.

IMPLEMENTATION

Pupils at Maltby Redwood participate in weekly, high quality PE and sporting activities, led by a specialist PE teacher. Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports and activities to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses.

We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school, in addition to intra school competition such as sports day. We are also provide opportunities for children to be part of our inter school competitive sporting events within the Maltby community and beyond. This is an inclusive approach which, endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also well-being. This is supplemented with a number of sports based extra-curricular clubs and activities.

IMPACT

Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Maltby Redwood, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. Within our lessons, children are taught about self-discipline and that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness. Our impact is therefore to motivate children to utilise their solid foundation of skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives.

In addition to this, our school promotes competitive sport and, encourages attendance at a wide range of inter-school competitions on a regular basis. We give all children the opportunity to play sport competitively which will increase participation outside of school.

This provides children with a wider outlook of life and opportunities to see how other children conduct themselves from other walks of life. It also demonstrates to children that further doors will open in life and that they have the opportunity to access these new horizons.

By the end of year 6, all children will have had swimming and basic water safety and life-saving lessons which are invaluable skills for life. The impact of this is that all children can be confident and safe around bodies of water.
